Dog Jumping on People and Other Dogs: How to Stop

20.05.2024 19:10

Four-legged animals, especially young ones who want to play, very often rush at people, jump and pester passers-by.

Therefore, owners may experience trouble. This dog habit can harm small animals or children.

To avoid awkward situations, it is worth thinking about training your animal in advance and teaching it the basic principles of living in society.

This will allow you to safely take your pet to the elevator, public transport and the veterinarian.

A dog attacks people for two reasons. The most common is the desire to make friends.

Dogs are open, playful and want to show love to every person they meet. Of course, some people like this behavior and like the animal, others react with anger and do not let the dog closer.

Since it is impossible to tell how a stranger will perceive the animal's behavior, it is best to prevent its contact with other people.

Some owners encourage the dog to be violent towards strangers, as some people show too much attention to other people's dogs and try to interact with them.

How to stop a dog from jumping

The first and most important thing is to maintain the correct posture when greeting your pet. The dog must know the basic commands and obey them, the most basic skill is to sit on command from the owner.

It is difficult to imagine starting training without teaching your dog the most common and frequently used signals. “Sit,” “come,” or “stay” are basic commands and should be familiar to all dogs. For puppies and adult dogs, learning to sit is usually quite simple.

Having created favorable conditions for exercising, you should call the dog to you and look into its eyes. Then show the dog a treat. First, you hold it close to the mouth, and then slowly bring it to the animal's rump, saying "sit."

The animal should react naturally - sit down and eat the treat. After several dozen repetitions of the command, you can expect a result. Adult dogs can be trained a little differently. We hold the dog on a fairly short leash. We bring the treat to the mouth and at the same time bring the leash to the croup, giving the command "sit". The dog will feel the pressure and thus sit down.

Once you have your dog seated, you can move on to other commands. The animal must connect the dots and understand that greetings should not take the form of uncontrolled attacks and jumping.

The more consistently you implement the training assumptions, the faster the effects will be visible. It should be remembered that when saying goodbye, you cannot put up with jumping and pranks of four-legged friends.

It is worth involving all your relatives and friends who visit you from time to time in the training process. Any correct behavior towards a stranger should be duly rewarded and appreciated. Your strictness towards the animal's behavior will not in any way affect its attitude towards you.

Dog obedience training

Training your dog to obey is an ongoing process that will last the entire life of the pet. Therefore, do not lose patience and expect that the effect will be noticeable in the first week of work.

Owners often make serious mistakes when training dogs, which result in inappropriate behavior of animals and cool relationships.

When you discipline a dog (yell at it, hit it, or lock it in an isolated room), you create unpleasant associations for it. Each subsequent return of the owner from work can be traumatic for him and cause an unpleasant feeling of humiliation.

The above method is only applicable if it is used by the entire family. Your efforts may become useless if you are unable to control the actions of other family members.

Once you have mastered your dog's behavior at home and taught him to respond to the command "sit," you can move on to a higher level of training, namely, taming the dog's desire to jump on people and other animals.

The method of training in the basic framework is similar to house training. Every time you see the dog "getting ready" to greet a stranger, he should be given the command "sit" and attract his attention to you.

It is also a good idea to focus your pet's interest on objects, toys, or places that are familiar to him. The owner can talk to the dog, distract it from passers-by, and do other things.

If the dog obeys your instructions, you should not forget to give it a small reward or short praise. The presented training method may seem relatively complicated and unachievable for people whose pets are extremely active and cannot be handled by peaceful methods.

Another effective way is to ignore abnormal behavior by separating the dog from people and animals. A dog on a leash remains under your control.

Any bad behavior can be eradicated by drawing him to you and stopping for a while. Once the dog has calmed down, you can continue the walk.

Sure, it's a very tiring and exhausting exercise that can frustrate both the dog and the owner. However, no other exercise brings such visible results and benefits.
