Most cats do not like to bathe in water and experience stress and fear from this process.

There are several reasons why cats don't like to bathe.

Cats are not accustomed to water from birth

In the wild, cats avoid water because it can be dangerous for them. The water can be frozen, polluted, or contain predators.

Cats also do not like to get caught in rain or snow, as this impairs their heat exchange and vision.

Cats do not like to lose control of their bodies. When a cat is placed in a bathtub or sink, it feels helpless and vulnerable.

She cannot get out of the water at will and is fighting for freedom. The cat also does not understand what is being done to her and why.

Cats do not like the smell of shampoo and other washing products. Cats are very sensitive to smells and prefer to have their own scent.

When a cat is washed with chemical products, it loses its scent and feels uncomfortable. The cat may also experience skin irritation or allergies from these products.

For these reasons, it can be concluded that cats do not need to be bathed often, if at all.

Cats can maintain their own cleanliness and health.

However, in some cases, a cat may need to be washed, for example, if it has become dirty with something poisonous or sticky, if it is old or sick and cannot groom itself, or if it is a purebred and needs special care.

In such cases, the following rules must be observed:

  • Prepare everything you need for bathing in advance: warm water, cat shampoo, towel, hair dryer.
  • Choose a suitable place for bathing: a bathtub, a sink or a basin.
  • Keep your cat safe and comfortable: close the door to prevent escape, place a rubber mat or towel on the bottom of the tub or sink to prevent slipping, cover her head with a towel or shower cap to protect her ears and eyes from water.
  • Be gentle and calm: speak to the cat in a quiet and affectionate voice, praise it for good behavior, avoid sudden movements and loud sounds.
  • Be quick and efficient: wet the cat gradually from tail to head, apply shampoo to the palm of your hand and massage its fur with light movements, rinse the shampoo with warm water from a shower or shower, wipe the cat with a towel and dry with a hairdryer on low speed.

By following these tips, you can minimize stress for your cat and make the bathing experience more enjoyable for both of you.
