Striped prankster: is it worth having a raccoon at home - all the pros and cons

If you are attracted by the cute face of a raccoon, do not rush to the pet store.

First, you need to make sure that you are mentally and financially ready for such a step.

Features of raccoons

Raccoons were originally wild animals that were gradually domesticated by enthusiasts. Therefore, you should never buy an animal from an unverified place: only breeders have truly tame animals.

A raccoon in the house is like a small child with one “but”: it will never grow up.

This means that the animal will constantly require your attention.

Raccoons are constantly on the move, so it is impossible to keep them in an enclosure. And keep in mind that they do not get along with other animals, so if you have a cat or dog in the house, it is better to forget about buying a raccoon right away.

Pros and cons

So, you can get a raccoon if you are ready:

  • give him all your attention and play with him;
  • put up with a mess in the house (raccoons are extremely inquisitive and smart, opening a closet and taking out all the contents is not a problem for them);
  • constantly find things that the animal has bathed in water.

You definitely shouldn't get a raccoon in the following cases:

  • if there are other animals or a small child at home;
  • if you like to sleep, since the animal’s active period often occurs at night;
  • if you are not ready to put up with the theft of your personal belongings and rinsing of gadgets in water.
