A London doctor has revealed the disturbing reason why millions of people may be allergic to ground coffee.
He warned that coffee drinkers could unknowingly drink microscopic traces of cockroaches.
Doctor Sermed Mezher shared this unpleasant fact with his followers on social networks, reports Mail Online .
He explained that during the collection, processing and grinding of coffee beans, it is impossible to completely eliminate the presence of contaminants.
Insects, including cockroaches, may come into contact with grain in fields, storage facilities, and production plants.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, up to 10% of every bag of coffee beans is contaminated with insect fragments.
However, the organization assured that this level is low and safe for human health.
Mezher said the idea of insect parts in coffee was disturbing.
He warned those with shellfish allergies to limit their consumption of the ground bean drink because of a possible reaction to tropomyosin.
