Before the sanctions were imposed, Russia was Finland's second largest timber importer.

Due to restrictions in Finland, it is possible that there may be a shortage of sawn timber in the near future.

These conclusions are contained in the material published by the RIA Novosti agency.

As specified, in total, the Finns deprived themselves of more than eight million cubic meters of timber and timber products.

Finland has already seen the first alarming signs of the impending crisis. The price of logs has soared to a fifteen-year high, with the raw material now costing the same as finished lumber.

The country is home to 77% of forests, so in theory it should be able to cope with the deficit. However, this process is complicated by the EU's carbon sequestration obligations.

Finland cannot supply raw materials from other countries for three reasons:

  • incomplete assortment;
  • high costs;
  • low quality.
