How a Toxic Boss Breaks an Employee: 6 Techniques

27.07.2024 20:15

Aggressive, abusive bosses making illogical requests are not at all uncommon.

Many people change jobs because of the oppression of management, losing career success and good salaries. But why do managers behave this way?

Is it really the power and the feeling of superiority over others that go to their heads? Not at all. An obedient, humiliated and emotionally exhausted employee is not dangerous.

Reasons for abusive behavior of the boss

In most cases, bosses break employees psychologically on purpose. After all, it took a lot of effort and underhanded games for a person to reach the position of a manager.

A broken subordinate cannot find the strength to undermine his boss, to seek a salary increase or to argue with a despot. And we must not forget about the self-esteem that the boss raises in the eyes of everyone around him.

There is a big difference between "fear" and "respect". In the first case, the employee feels like a lower class, who is shown his place. He is afraid to correct the boss, even when he sees his mistake.

Respect means communicating according to the chain of command accepted in the company, and directing efforts towards effective work without contradictions.

Methods of psychological pressure by management

Mutually exclusive tasks

"Sit in your office - bring me the papers." Double, contradictory tasks. In this case, the employee will never be right, no matter what he does. He understands in advance that he will receive a reprimand, but he cannot defend his position and opinion.

Devaluation of work

A despotic boss never notices the work of his subordinates, does not say words of praise, taking it for granted. Moreover, in excellent work he will still find a flaw.

Blending Borders

An unpleasant manager does not see the boundaries between an employee’s personal life and professional responsibilities.

He can ask questions about marriage, touch personal things, take whatever he wants from the table without asking, and comment on appearance.

Blatant abuse

An irresponsible boss can insult his employee in front of colleagues and clients, belittle his professional and office qualities, criticize without reason. Accordingly, such behavior manifests itself in private as well.

Inciting conflicts

Direct pitting of employees against each other for the sake of "spectacles". He engages in slander, spreading gossip, and having achieved the result, sits aside and enjoys the seething passions.

A small percentage of rivalry is always needed in a team, because it is motivation for advancement and success in work. However, colleagues should compete without the help of toxic management.

Information that confuses the result

The manager feeds the subordinate false information that distracts him from solving the problems. He thereby sets up the employee, makes him weak, helpless, and shows his power.

Knowing the techniques will allow employees to avoid manipulation and humiliation. A healthy team is, first of all, an adequate leader. No career is worth emotional exhaustion.
