Members of the lower house of parliament have postponed the ratification of the protocol to the agreement on the trade regime with Abkhazia.

This became known on Monday, December 9.

The approval of the protocol was postponed “to a later date,” RIA Novosti reports, citing a source in the State Duma.

This decision was made against the backdrop of events in Abkhazia.

On October 30, Russia and the neighboring republic signed an investment agreement.

In two weeks, the Abkhaz parliament was supposed to discuss the ratification of this document.

Opposition members spoke out against the agreement. They organized rallies that ended with the president's resignation.

The opposition did not want real estate to be built in the region using Russian funds.

They believed that ratification of the agreement would create risks for the national economy, leading to an increase in housing prices and dealing a blow to small and medium-sized businesses.

For now, the issue is "hanging." Probably, some progress will occur after the presidential elections, which are scheduled for February 15, 2025.
