Any novice gardener will shudder at threats like “you’ll reap what you didn’t sow.”

Planting peppers raises many questions. When to plant? What to throw in the hole? Is it possible to plant different varieties next to each other?

Expert of the online publication TUT NOVOSTI, agronomist Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what nuances should be taken into account when planting peppers.

The danger of cross-pollination

Bell peppers (sweet, salad, paprika) and hot peppers (hot, bitter, red, chili, cayenne) are considered to be the same species.

But it is not recommended to grow these two groups next to each other. They can cross-pollinate and change their main qualities, including taste.

Mother plants of different varieties should be planted at a decent distance. This is at least 10 meters.

But even in this case, there remains some chance that the pollen will be carried by insects.

If hot and sweet peppers grow side by side, the latter may produce fruits with a bitter taste even in the first generation.

The changes usually affect all parts of the pepper. Bitterness appears in both the leaves and pollen.

Therefore, it is not recommended to plant peppers of different varieties nearby.
