Are you sure your garden beds are planned correctly?
Garlic, which is considered the protector of the garden, can secretly kill neighboring plants.
Garlic releases phytoncides and allelopathic substances that suppress the growth of “competitors”.
A study by the All-Russian Institute of Vegetable Growing confirmed that 30% of plants within a radius of 40 cm from garlic yield a 50% worse harvest. But there are crops that suffer more than others.
4 victim plants: replant urgently
1. Peas and beans
Why? Garlic blocks the absorption of nitrogen, which is vital for legumes.
Result: the pods are formed empty, the roots become weak.
- Data: Pea yields drop by 70% when grown within 30 cm of garlic.
2. Cabbage (all types)
Why: garlic slows down the development of heads of cabbage, and cabbage “crushes” its bulbs with its roots.
Sign of a problem: cabbage stretches upward without forming a head.
Solution: minimum distance is 1 meter.
3. Parsley and dill
Why: The herbs lose their flavor due to the essential substances in garlic.
Experiment: in 2023, agronomists proved that dill next to garlic contains 2 times less esters.
Tip: Separate the greens with a bed of onions - they are neutral.
4. Strawberries
Why: Garlic dehydrates the soil, while strawberries need constant moisture.
Symptoms: berries become smaller, leaves turn yellow.
Fact: Even mulch doesn’t help – the roots compete for resources.
1. Carrots - garlic repels carrot flies.
2. Beets - do not compete for nutrients.
3. Tomatoes - protects against aphids and spider mites.
4. Flowers: roses, gladioli - garlic reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
1. Transplant the garlic. If it has been growing for less than 2 weeks, carefully transfer it to a separate bed.
2. Install a barrier. Dig in sheets of slate or plastic between the crops to a depth of 30 cm.
3. Fertilize the "victims". For legumes - nitrogen fertilizers, for cabbage - phosphorus fertilizers.
1. Check the planting scheme. Move all "forbidden" crops away from the garlic.
2. If space is limited, plant garlic in containers. Cut bottles or buckets will do.
3. Replace dangerous neighbors with neutral ones. For example, sow spinach instead of parsley.
