Agathonic Day: What Can and Cannot Be Done on This Holiday – Note for Orthodox Christians

Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the martyrs Agathonicus, Zotik, Theoprepius, Akindinus, Severian and many others.
People call this celebration Agathonik Day.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to hide from the spirit of the forest and not visit the corresponding places.
Agathonicus was born into the noble family of the Gippasii of Nicodemia. Even at a young age, he showed a keen interest in learning.
Thus, in particular, the saint easily mastered the Holy Scriptures thanks to his natural inclination to preaching.
Moreover, as he grew older, Agathonicus managed to convert a large number of idolaters to religion, which was strongly condemned by Emperor Maximilian.
Agathonicus, together with other believers, namely, Zotikos, Theoprepius, Akindinos, Severian and others, were seized and thrown into prison.
Believers were subjected to terrible physical suffering, in an attempt to convert them to paganism. However, despite the torture, the preachers did not give up.
Then the preachers were sent to the emperor for trial, but many of them died on the way, never reaching the ruler.
What you shouldn't do on Agathonic Day
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
- did not indulge in sad thoughts and did not feel sad;
- did not go to the forest or fishing;
- did not go on vacation, especially on business trips.
It was on September 4 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to be lazy. Otherwise, according to beliefs, you can miss out on luck.
What can you do on Agathonic Day?
Today it is recommended to do as many good deeds as possible, namely, to help others.
In addition, you can do good and diligent work.
This day is also perfect for baking pies and treating your loved ones to them.
