A cat named Peace, who lived in the house of Japanese Governor Norihisa Satake for 12 years, died.

The cat's death was caused by illness.

Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a Siberian cat to the governor of Japan's northern prefecture of Akita, TASS reports.

In the summer of 2012, Satake gave Putin a Japanese Akita Inu puppy, and in return the Russian leader presented him with an ash-colored kitten.

In Japan, the cat was named after the word "peace", which sounds like "miru" in local transcription.

A Siberian cat given to him by Putin spent six months in quarantine at Tokyo's Narita International Airport.

After the required procedures, the kitten settled in the governor’s house.

Over the course of 12 years of his life, the kitten became a favorite of the governor’s family for his calm character, cheerful disposition, and good appetite.

The Akita Prefectural Public Relations Office said the cat's death was due to illness.
