A flight from the Netherlands to Mexico has made an emergency landing in Bermuda due to an "unbearable smell" in the cabin.

The crew of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner of the KLM carrier and more than 250 passengers who were flying from Amsterdam and Mexico City found themselves in an unusual situation.

All because of the decision to transport about 100 live pigs in the cargo hold of a passenger plane, reports the Aviation A2Z portal.

The first hours of the flight proceeded normally. But then an unpleasant smell spread throughout the cabin, which forced the crew to take action.

Six hours into the flight, the aircraft commander contacted the ground and requested permission to make an unscheduled landing in Bermuda.

It was decided to unload the animals and continue the flight without them.

While the specialists were working with the plane and the live cargo, a day passed. The passengers were placed in local hotels during this time.

The next day the airliner continued on its way, and a separate plane was sent for the pigs.
