According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, 13 people were evacuated from the Volgoneft 212 tanker, one of whom died.
Some of them were lifted from the water by an Emergencies Ministry helicopter, and the rest of the sailors were picked up by a tugboat.
Accident in the Kerch Strait
As a result of bad weather and strong waves, the cargo ship Volgoneft 212 had its bow broken by the waves, and Volgoneft 239 had problems with its stern.
The incident likely resulted in an oil spill. Each tanker was carrying approximately 4 tons of fuel oil.
Prosecutors will conduct an investigation into the incident.
Investigators have opened two criminal cases regarding the sinking of tankers in the Black Sea.
The operation to rescue crew members from another ship in distress, Volgoneft 239, is currently ongoing.
