How to Store Avocado at Home

In Russian stores you can often find avocados that are not yet ripe - hard to the touch.

They need to be stored at room temperature to ripen.

To speed up this process, you need to put the avocado in a paper bag with an apple or banana and keep it in the kitchen, says Irina Vorontsova , an expert at the 9 Monks ECOmarket.

In Mexico, where avocados are part of the daily diet, several unripe fruits are wrapped in newspaper at a time and stored on a sunny windowsill. They usually take a day to fully ripen.

If you have a ripe avocado, there are several ways to store it - the choice here depends on whether you have a whole or cut fruit and how you plan to use it in the future.

If the avocado is ripe and whole, but you won't be eating it right now, put it in the refrigerator. It can be kept like this for up to 2 weeks.

If the avocado is already cut, but you haven’t eaten it whole, then you can only save the part with the pit.

It needs to be wrapped in cling film so that it touches the pulp - this will prevent air from getting in (from contact with it, the avocado darkens and acquires a mushy texture). For the same purpose, you can grease the cut with olive oil or sprinkle with lemon juice.

Another option is to place the fruit in an airtight container cut side down. In all these cases, it can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than three days.

You can also chop the avocado in a blender, add tomatoes, lemon juice and herbs and store it in the refrigerator as guacamole sauce. In this form, the avocado will be suitable for eating for 5 days.

Finally, the sliced pieces can be frozen. It is better to sprinkle them with lemon juice beforehand. Avocado can be stored in the freezer for up to six months, but keep in mind that the texture of the fruit will change - it will become more watery.
