A Chinese citizen was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport while planning to take out an unusual cargo.

Details were reported on the Telegram channel of the Federal Customs Service of Russia.

The 35-year-old man planned to fly from Moscow to Guangzhou, taking with him 40 kg of woolly mammoth tusks.

He did not declare this cargo, for which he was detained.

The law states that you can only export one fragment of mammoth tusk, the weight of which does not exceed 10 kg.

Over 3,000 pieces of tusks were found in the passenger's suitcases. Their value was estimated at over 1 million rubles.

The man explained that he was unaware of the declaration procedure. He also said that he had purchased the tusks to make souvenirs.

But customs officials once again made it clear that ignorance of the law does not exempt from liability.

A criminal case was opened against the passenger for smuggling cultural property on a large scale.

The foreigner faces a prison term of up to 7 years and a fine of up to 1 million rubles.
