An international team of scientists from China, Germany and the United States has discovered a close link between the ozone layer and forest fires.
According to researchers, the fact that humanity is gradually beginning to abandon ozone-depleting substances has a beneficial effect on the planet's ecosystem.
Professor Han Su from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said: “The number of forest fires is decreasing,” as reported by the Pravda.ru portal.
However, the scientist believes that another significant problem may arise.
Citing recent research, Han Su noted that large forest fires can trigger the appearance of a so-called smoke vortex.
This concept should be understood as “a powerful atmospheric funnel filled with smoke.”
This type of phenomenon ejects substances released by raging fires into the stratosphere to a height of up to 35 kilometers.
This process, in turn, further destroys the ozone layer, allowing solar radiation to hit the Earth.
