An expert warned Russians about the potential danger that GIF messages in the WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) may pose.

If they wish, scammers can make them potentially dangerous for users' devices.

The Director of Information Technology at EdgeCenter, Sergei Lipov, made this statement in an interview with the RT television channel.

As the expert noted, the scammers once again demonstrated their ingenuity by introducing malware into harmless GIF cards that users exchange in the popular WhatsApp messenger.

According to Lipov, the scheme works as follows: The attachment may contain malicious code or a link to a phishing site.

By accepting an app that looks like a greeting card on their phone, users become vulnerable to fraudsters who gain access to confidential data.

To protect yourself from such threats, Lipov recommended installing reliable software on your device and updating it regularly.
