Russia has lost an island in the Arctic Ocean.

Details were reported by the Russian Geographical Society (RGS).

The Franz Josef Land archipelago included Mesyatsev Island, which covered an area of 53 hectares.

However, the Russian Geographical Society website notes that the island melted as a result of global warming.

Experts note that due to the disappearance of the island, Russia will have to correct navigation charts.

Back in 2015, the presence of this island was traced on maps. But by the summer of this year, its area had shrunk to three hectares. In the fall, Mesyatsev Island completely disappeared.

Experts added that its disappearance was not only due to melting ice. Rising sea levels caused coastal erosion.

For several years now, environmentalists have been declaring that global warming threatens to flood coastal regions.

Small islands all over the planet are the first to take the brunt. In the long term, it may even reach megacities located on the coasts of seas and oceans.
