The popular Russian resort of Gelendzhik is suffering from an unprecedented invasion of mosquitoes this year.
The increase in the population of blood-sucking insects is primarily due to the warm weather that set in last winter.
RIA Novosti received this commentary on the current situation from Vladimir Gladun, Associate Professor of the Department of Zoology at KubSU and PhD in Biology.
This year, tourists who chose Gelendzhik for a beach holiday encountered clouds of mosquitoes. Vacationers even dubbed the coast a swamp.
According to Gladun, the reason lies in the excessively warm winter and insufficient treatment of the region against midges, which led to the mass appearance of mosquitoes.
The humid climate, coupled with the large number of bodies of water in the region, contributed to the emergence of clouds of mosquitoes.
However, the expert suggested that tourists will not experience discomfort for long. If the heat that has settled on the coast continues, then most of the adults will soon die.
Earlier it was reported that in Gelendzhik the police arrested men who slept on the Eternal Flame.
