Putin cancels Friendship Games until further notice
The Russian President approved a decree concerning the sports tournament.
Vladimir Putin signed a document that cancels the World Friendship Games in Moscow and Yekaterinburg until “special notice.”
The corresponding decree (comes into force on the day of signing) was posted on Monday, December 2, on the official website for the publication of legal acts.
The use of funds allocated for the organization and holding of events has been suspended.
The Friendship Games were supposed to be a large-scale sporting event.
The competition was scheduled to take place in September 2024. Athletes from approximately 70 countries were to participate in the competition.
RUB 8.3 billion was allocated for the organization and holding of the Games, with more than 50% going to prize money.
For first place, the athlete was awarded a gold medal and a cash prize of $40,000.
There were also cash prizes for second and third place – $30 thousand and $20 thousand, respectively.
