The moratorium on the death penalty remains in place in Russia.
The decision comes despite a surge in discussions about the need to lift the moratorium.
“This position was formulated by the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, the moratorium is in effect,” Grigory Lukyantsev, director of the Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an exclusive interview with Izvestia .
He stressed that the issue of the possibility of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty is once again relevant after the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in March 2024.
Despite these discussions, the position formulated by the Constitutional Court of Russia remains.
Grigory Lukyantsev reminded that the current moratorium must be observed.
It was established during the Russian Federation’s membership in the Council of Europe, in accordance with its obligations.
Lukyantsev believes that changes in this matter will depend on the bodies making decisions based on the discussion that has arisen.
However, these requests will always be there, but first we need to wait to see if they lead to any specific steps.
Earlier, the head of the Investigative Committee Bastrykin proposed lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in the Russian Federation.
