Dog relieves itself where it shouldn't: what to do

23.05.2024 06:10

Using natural remedies will help prevent your dog from urinating in inappropriate places.

Before applying the repellent, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the area where it is applied. This is not a simple cleaning, since the smell remains in places where there was urine or feces.

After this, the area should be cleaned using enzymatic agents, which are environmentally friendly. They dissolve and break down various chemical and natural waste, even in hard-to-reach places.

If your dog has urinated on your curtains or carpets, don't rub the area with absorbent towels.

It is best to simply place rags on the area and let them absorb the liquid. Otherwise, you will only spread the urine to unaffected areas. After this, the textiles should be washed.

If the affected area is covered with feces, use toilet paper to remove them. Soak a towel in an enzyme solution or neutral soap and wipe off the remains. Once everything is clean, you can apply the repellent.

Benefits of Natural Repellents

There are different types of repellents on the market. Some of the most recommended are natural ones, which have certain advantages over chemical ones.

These include cayenne pepper, lemon, vinegar, or aromatic plants such as lemongrass. Make sure your pet is not allergic.

Lemon: The Best Dog Repellent

Repellents made from lemon are considered the best of all. Research shows that dogs' sense of smell is 40 times more sensitive than humans', and the lemon smell is very unpleasant for animals.

The mixture with lemon is safe for health and can be used in the house to prevent the dog from doing its "business" where it should not. There are products on the market that contain the active ingredient lemon, but you can make the mixture yourself.

All you need:

  • lemons
  • water
  • baking soda

Squeeze enough lemons to get 100 milliliters of juice, mix it with 50 milliliters of water, and then add a tablespoon of baking soda. Shake or stir the mixture well, pour it into a spray bottle and apply to the affected area.

Repeat this procedure as often as necessary until your dog stops going to the toilet in that area.

Oranges, tangerines and citrus fruits

Repellents can also be made from oranges, tangerines, limes or grapefruits. If you use sweet citrus fruits, the surface you apply them to may become slightly sticky due to the glucose they contain.

Vinegar

This is a product that most people have at home. It is used to flavor salads and prepare some culinary dishes.

It is also used in the cleaning process because it has disinfectant properties. This liquid has a strong smell, so it is also used in the creation of dog repellents.

As with lemon, the smell of vinegar is too strong for dogs, so they will stay away when they smell it.

If you want to make a homemade repellent using this liquid, you will need the following ingredients:

  • hot water
  • vinegar

All you need to do is mix hot water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Then, spread the mixture on the affected area and leave it for 30 minutes. You can use the remedy again next time if needed.

Repellent with alcohol

Alcohol has excellent antibacterial properties and is therefore commonly used to disinfect wounds and surfaces. The smell of alcohol is quite strong and will scare your dog away.

To use alcohol in this way, simply mix it with water and apply it with a spray bottle. It is recommended to supervise the dog to make sure it does not lick the mixture, as alcohol can cause diarrhea and digestive problems.

When a dog defecates on the couch, it is much more difficult to eliminate the smell and prevent the behavior from happening again. It is important to thoroughly remove the smell from deep within the furniture. Then use a strong deterrent.

Cayenne pepper

Cayenne pepper not only prevents dogs from pooping on sofas, but also prevents them from chewing on furniture. This active ingredient should be used with caution, as it irritates the mucous membranes of the dog.

There are two types of application: powder and liquid.
The first method of application is simple: just sprinkle some ground pepper on the affected area. The second method involves mixing the powder with a small amount of water in a spray bottle.

Hydrogen peroxide

The product does not have a strong smell for people, but dogs do not like it. To use it, you need to prepare a mixture in a bottle of water. You will also need clean water. First, use the mixture with hydrogen peroxide to spray, leave it for 30 minutes, and then spray the area with clean water.

Repellents Not Recommended for Dogs

While there are countless repellents on the market, you should be wary of those that contain harmful chemicals:

Naphthalene: This is a toxic substance that can be deadly to dogs.

Ammonia and chlorine: Both substances have a smell similar to urine, so they will not repel dogs.

Chili: This substance irritates dogs' mucous membranes due to its high concentration of capsaicinoids, the compounds that give chili its spiciness.

How to Stop a Dog from Urinating and Defecating in the House

If your dog is constantly defecating in the house, you should not limit yourself to using repellents alone.

It is important to find out the reasons why the animal cannot wait to go outside or why it does not use the designated area in the house. This may be due to stress, urinary tract disease or problems with self-control.
