Why do dogs howl at the moon

Does your dog howl at night as if warning of trouble?

Scientists debunk myths: howling is not associated with the moon or the otherworldly.

A Duke University study explains: It's a form of long-range communication. Wolves howl to gather their pack, and domestic dogs howl to "call" their owner or to express alarm.

But there are nuances. Ethologist Patricia McConnell writes in her book "The Emotions of Dogs":

“Breeds with wolf DNA (huskies, malamutes) howl more often - this is genetic memory.”

Husky owner Karina from Murmansk shares:

"Lunach howled every time I left. Training with a dog trainer helped - now he "sings" only at the sound of a siren."

However, howling can signal problems:

  • Pain (eg, arthritis or ear injury).
  • Cognitive dysfunction in older dogs.
  • Separation anxiety (accompanied by damage to things).

Solution? Veterinarians recommend:

  • Get examined by a neurologist.
  • Use adaptogens (eg CBD oil with your doctor's permission).
  • Turn on some white noise while you're away.
