Moldova does not intend to repay its debt to Gazprom.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean said the $709 million gas debt would not be repaid.

In his opinion, Gazprom is trying to link gas supplies to this debt. This is reported by the Moldova 1 TV channel.

In 2021, the parties signed a gas supply contract, one of the conditions of which was debt repayment.

Moldova insisted on an international debt audit. In September 2023, the government proposed to pay

Gazprom 8.6 million dollars and write off the rest.

The situation is now complicated by Ukraine’s desire to stop the transit of Russian gas.

Recean also stressed that Gazprom is obliged to deliver gas using alternative routes. Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlicov stressed that both parties violated the terms of the contract.

After gas supplies were cut in 2022, Moldova sent Russian gas to Transnistria for electricity generation.

Despite the possible increase in gas tariffs, Rechan spoke out against paying off Gazprom's announced debt of $709 million.
