July is the month when mistakes in caring for onions and garlic can destroy all the work spent during the season.

Most summer residents diligently water their beds, not suspecting that this is the main reason for the rotting of bulbs.

In fact, from mid-July, watering should be reduced to a minimum, and a salt solution should be used instead of water. Regular table salt, diluted in a proportion of 100 g per 10 l of water and introduced into furrows at a distance of 10 cm from the plants, destroys onion fly larvae and stimulates the growth of heads.

But there is a nuance: you need to water only in dry weather and no more than once every 10 days. In just 48 hours, you will notice how the onion feathers become juicier and stop turning yellow, and the garlic heads become denser and larger.

However, remember: exceeding the salt concentration or watering frequency will salinize the soil, so the method is only suitable for mid-to-late July, when the bulbs have already formed. Try it on one bed - the difference with the control group will amaze you.

But salt is not the only helper. To prevent onion fly, sprinkle the beds with tobacco dust or ground pepper. If the feathers start to turn yellow prematurely, water the plants with ammonia solution (3 tablespoons per 10 liters of water) - this will replenish the nitrogen deficiency.

In July, garlic benefits from a superphosphate solution (2 tbsp. per 10 l of water): it will strengthen the heads. Also, do not break off the garlic shoots completely - leave 2-3 pieces: by their condition, you will determine the harvesting time when the shell of the inflorescences begins to crack.

After salt watering, be sure to loosen the soil to avoid crust formation. And do not store onions and garlic together: they release different substances that accelerate spoilage.

To make the bulbs large, feed them with potassium at the beginning of July. Dissolve 1 tbsp. of potassium sulfate in 10 liters of water and water under the root.

For garlic, add 1 tbsp of wood ash to the solution - this will increase the shelf life. If you notice rust on the leaves, treat them with Bordeaux mixture (1% solution). But do this in the morning so that the leaves have time to dry before evening.

After harvesting, dry the onions and garlic in the sun for 2-3 days, then trim off the roots and tops.

Store onions in nets in a dry room, and garlic in wicker baskets at a temperature of +2-5°C. If the heads begin to sprout, wrap them in foil - this will stop the growth.
