Abraham of Smolensk was born into a wealthy family in the 12th century AD. He was born in Smolensk, which is why he got his nickname.

The parents of the future saint already had twelve daughters, but they prayed for the appearance of a son in their family in order to transfer the management of the estate into his hands.

However, instead of starting a family business, Abraham chose the path of a priest.

The future saint studied diligently and soon went to serve in the temple, rejecting his parents' offer of marriage.

Eventually, when Abraham's parents died, he sold their property and gave the money to the poor, as the elders from the holy books told him to do.

After this event, the preacher dressed in rags and took the form of a holy fool, after which he went as a monk to the monastery of the Mother of God. There he began to diligently copy books.
