Today, Orthodox believers celebrate a great twelve-day feast called the “Assumption of the Most Holy Lady, the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary.”
Among the people, this celebration is called the Dormition of the Mother of God.
In Rus', it was customary to say goodbye to summer on this day, since this day was the last summer period.

The Dormition of the Mother of God is one of the twelve great feasts celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church.
This holiday is directly connected with the earthly life of Jesus Christ and his Holy Mother.
The feast is Theotokos to a greater extent. This means that it is directly dedicated to the Mother of God.
Before this celebration, Orthodox believers observe a very strict fast. It is as strict as Lent or the fast before Easter.
In particular, you cannot eat any products of animal origin for two weeks.
In addition, on this day, believers strive to attend a special service dedicated to the burial of the Mother of God.
What you can't do on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
- did not work, especially very hard;
- did not have haircuts, especially unmarried women;
- We didn't go barefoot, we tried to wear at least socks.
It was on August 28 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to quarrel with relatives. Otherwise, according to beliefs, a whole year of misfortunes would come.
What can you do on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Today it is recommended to go to church for worship.
In addition, you can set a festive table and have a good dinner.
The evening time of the day should be spent with loved ones, in particular close relatives.
