October 9th according to the Orthodox calendar is the day of remembrance of the Evangelist John the Theologian.
As on the day of Kapustnik, on the day of the Theologian they also watched the snow and judged the upcoming weather by it.
It was believed that snow falling on October 9th would herald the beginning of winter on Michaelmas Day on November 21st.
