The migrant girl spent several days in the open sea and managed to survive.

An 11-year-old girl from the African country of Sierra Leone was accidentally found by rescuers in the Mediterranean Sea.

BBC News reports details with reference to employees of the Compass Collective organization.

The rescuers initially went out to sea in response to another call. On the way, they heard children's cries for help.

"It was an incredible coincidence that we heard the child's voice despite the engine running," said one of the rescuers.

A young Sierra Leonean woman was caught on a boat with migrants from Tunisia. They were sailing to Europe when a storm hit and the boat capsized. There were 44 people on board.

So far, none of the girl's fellow travelers have been found. It is believed that she is the only survivor.

But they didn't find her right away. After the crash, the girl spent 3 days in the open sea.

She survived thanks to a life jacket and two air-filled tire tubes.

She sat on this improvised life preserver and hoped that someone would, by chance, float by.

The girl was not injured. She was taken to Italy. Local doctors only recorded signs of hypothermia.
