An elderly British woman has been kept alive thanks to baking soda.
Beatrice Johnson, 60, contracted flesh-eating bacteria and was taken to hospital, where doctors were unable to help her.
The British tabloid The Sun tells an unusual story.

It all started with a sudden weakness that overcame Johnson, followed by stomach problems.
The woman did not attach much importance to these symptoms. But after some time she became so weak that she could not climb the stairs. The woman turned to doctors.
Beatrice was hospitalized. At the hospital, she was connected to a life support system and all possible treatment options were selected. But the patient's condition worsened.
One option was sodium bicarbonate, which is known as baking soda. The drug was administered through an IV drip and gradually the woman's condition began to stabilize.
Experts found that Beatrice nearly died after contracting flesh-eating bacteria. They took root in the woman's nose and ate away at the tissue. The patient's body was unable to fight them off.
Johnson told reporters that she is now gradually recovering. She thanks doctors for the miraculous recovery: "I never thought that baking soda would save my life."
