The newly elected US president was given the cold shoulder after his statement about the island being under Danish control.

Greenland's Prime Minister has responded to Donald Trump, who wanted to buy the island and transfer it under Washington's control.

The politician had not yet returned to the White House when he wanted to make Canada and Mexico US possessions, as well as regain control of the Panama Canal.

Now Trump's ambitions have reached Greenland, the world's largest island, currently controlled by Denmark.

Prime Minister Mute Egede said that Greenland is not for sale and will never be sold.

"Greenland is ours. <…> We must not lose our long fight for freedom," the politician said in a written comment to Reuters .

Trump has made it clear that he has his sights set on Greenland.

He said the island was "absolutely essential" to the United States.

Earlier it became known that Ken Howery would be Washington's ambassador to Denmark.

He was formerly a member of the US diplomatic mission in Sweden and is also an entrepreneur.

Trump believes he can reach an agreement with Denmark on the amount of the deal.
