Syria's opposition movement has unexpectedly declared that wearing the hijab is not mandatory.
The armed opposition leadership has issued a decree banning the forced wearing of hijabs in Syria.
According to state-run Al Watan newspaper on social media, the directive specifically prohibits forcing women to wear certain clothes or influencing their choice of clothing.

The opposition leadership categorically prohibits making claims regarding the appearance of Syrian women.
Any threats against women are prohibited, the new authorities emphasized in a statement.
The opposition leadership also set penalties for violating these directives. Those found guilty will face up to one year in prison.
The new measures come as the opposition seeks to define its approach to personal freedoms and rights after Assad's departure.
The opposition forces also stated in a statement that the new government is building a Syria that will accept everyone without exception.
