A suspect in the case of torture in the Saratov prison hospital has been found dead in a pre-trial detention facility in Moscow.
Viktor Sheyanov will be found dead in a cell at the Matrosskaya Tishina pretrial detention center No. 1 on December 25.
He was involved in a case of torture in a Saratov prison hospital, RIA Novosti reports, citing law enforcement agencies.
No marks were found on the deceased's body that could indicate violence.
In the fall of 2021, a scandal erupted after footage of torture of convicts surfaced on the Internet in the Saratov region.
The Investigative Committee has opened a number of criminal cases on possible cases of violence against convicts at the Regional Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Saratov Region.
As a result, the head of OTB-1 and the head of the regional Federal Penitentiary Service, as well as other officers, lost their posts.
The investigation established 44 episodes related to violent sexual acts and extortion crimes.
The former head of the institution and the head of the security department were engaged in extortion from prisoners.
Under their leadership, convicts committed illegal acts against other convicts.
A high-profile criminal case has been transferred to the Moscow Regional Court for consideration.
