By appearance

The first thing that catches your eye when choosing a watermelon is its appearance.

Watch for these signs:

  • The shape of the watermelon should be correct, without deformations, cracks or damage. This indicates that it was grown in good conditions and was not subjected to chemical treatment.
  • The rind color should be bright, rich, and even. Avoid pale, greenish, or yellowish watermelons, as they may be underripe or overripe.
  • There should be a clearly visible yellow spot on the rind - this is the place where the watermelon lay on the ground. The brighter and larger the spot, the riper the watermelon.
  • The size of the watermelon does not matter much, but it is better to choose medium or small specimens, as they are usually sweeter and juicier.

By sound

Another way to check the ripeness of a watermelon is to tap it with your hand or finger.

Depending on the sound you hear, you can draw a conclusion about the quality of the fruit:

  • If the sound is dull and dull, then the watermelon is unripe or overripe. In the first case, it will be hard and tasteless, in the second - soft and watery.
  • If the sound is loud and sharp, the watermelon is fresh and ripe. It will be crispy, juicy and sweet.
  • If the sound is hollow, the watermelon is overripe or spoiled. It may be too soft, with rot.

By smell

Finally, another criterion for choosing a watermelon is its smell.

A good watermelon should have a pleasant sweet aroma that can be felt even through the rind.

If you don’t feel any smell or it’s unpleasant, then it’s better to refuse to buy such a fruit.
