A powerful flare occurred on the Sun, causing plasma to be directed towards the Earth.

The phenomenon that provoked magnetic storms promises Muscovites and residents of St. Petersburg an unusual phenomenon.

The head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sergei Bogachev, told RIA Novosti about this.

According to the expert, a sharp increase in the possibility of seeing the northern lights is expected in the near future.

Moreover, the phenomenon, which is usually characteristic of northern latitudes, can be seen by both Muscovites and St. Petersburg residents.

A strong solar flare, which was assigned class G4 on a five-point scale, led to the probability increasing significantly: by 80% for residents of the northern capital and by 60% for Muscovites.

Bogachev recalled that the magnetic storm began just a few hours ago and has not yet reached its peak. However, the phenomenon will last for about two days.

According to preliminary estimates by experts, its strength could eventually reach the G4.5 mark, but there is only a 10-20 percent chance that it will be assigned the highest category.
