His residence is empty, although it is claimed that he has not left the capital.
US officials told CNN that Assad could lose power in the next few days.
According to the official version of the Syrian presidential office, Assad did not leave the capital.
However, sources claim that Assad cannot be found anywhere in the city.
Also, leader Assad's presidential guard is no longer located at his usual place of residence, as it was before.
The change in the usual situation gave rise to speculation that Assad might leave Damascus.
Rebel forces have no reliable information about Assad's whereabouts.
In Damascus, they say the city is in a state of tension and panic among local residents.
