The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the suspension of seaweed fishing for Japan in the Kuril Islands zone.

Moscow's decision will come into effect on July 15. The reason cited is maintenance work at the local lighthouse.

Starting next week, Russia will suspend cooperation with Japan on marine fishing in the area of Signalny Island, which is part of the Lesser Kuril Ridge.

A statement on the agency's website said that some time ago, Tokyo representatives contacted Moscow in connection with the "power outage" at the lighthouse.

Japan demanded that it be restored to work so as not to endanger seafarers in the area. First of all, we are talking about Japanese fishermen who harvest kelp in the area.

Russia considered Tokyo's request. It was decided to suspend Japan's fishing in the Signalny zone until repairs were completed at the lighthouse.

It is not reported how long these measures will take. But during this period, Japanese fishermen will lose the right to engage in marine fishing in this area.
