The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not ignore the statements of the Finnish and Estonian authorities.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the establishment of adjacent borders in the waters of the Gulf of Finland is the sovereign right of the two states that have access to it.

However, when it comes to banning shipping, such plans run counter to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

This document provides that states have no right to hinder or in any way regulate or influence international shipping.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the threat from official Helsinki and Tallinn is unclear, but the department assumes that the authorities of the two European countries will ultimately adhere to the above-mentioned Convention and its provisions.
