Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a global problem of the 21st century.
Many modern people of different ages are forced to wear glasses or contact lenses to correct visual acuity.
Ophthalmologist Ekaterina Glushchenko answered the question of whether myopia is transmitted through genes in an interview with thesb.by portal.
According to the specialist, the coding of human vision occurs in the DNA chain.
Glushchenko emphasized that myopia is essentially a disease that is influenced by many factors.
According to the doctor, myopia can be acquired as a result of trauma or an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as hereditary.
The specialist explained: "This eye disease itself cannot be transmitted. But a person may have a genetic predisposition to it."
According to research by ophthalmologists, if one of the parents suffers from myopia, the risk of the child developing this disease increases by 50 percent.
