According to the doctor, leukonychia occurs in the nail growth zone when the process of filling the nail plate with keratin is disrupted.
White spots can appear as a result of microtrauma to the nail or genetic predisposition.
Among other possible causes, the doctor identified systemic diseases, including diabetes.
Portnova noted that true leukonychia goes away gradually as the nail grows.
Apparent leukonychia occurs in the nail bed due to abnormal vascular arrangement and does not resolve as the nail grows.
