US recalls popular eye drops over contamination risk
Alcon Laboratories has recalled a batch of Systane eye drops due to a fungal infection.
Contamination of the drug with fungus can lead to eye infections.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a statement following a consumer complaint.
The foreign material was found inside a sealed disposable vial.
The study confirmed that the contamination was fungal in nature.
Accordingly, such an ophthalmic product may potentially cause eye infections.
The department noted that the fungus can pose a threat to vision, and in very rare cases, a threat to life.
Systane eye drops were distributed in the United States through retail and online stores.
Consumers have been urged to stop using them immediately.
Alcon Laboratories offers return of purchases for replacement or refund.
